Founder
Sylvia Flores Larrain
I was born in Chile and settled in Australia in 2006. As a lifelong learner, my previous studies have included theatre, dance and philosophy. I found my true calling when I studied acupuncture in Brisbane, and in my time working as a deshi (student) for 5 years at the Queensland Sports Medicine Centre under Alan Jansson.
In 2012 I had the privilege of travelling to Japan for an intensive study seminar with Masakazu Ikeda Sensei (Traditional Japanese Acupuncture Master) and continued this connection by attending an additional “Wisdom of the Classics” seminar in 2018.
I am a strong advocate of the value of acupuncture for the treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases and musculoskeletal conditions. As a practitioner, I am devoted to continuing to learn and improve my craft. It gives me great joy to work with people from all backgrounds and age groups, including children and the elderly.
Our
Services
At Gentle Acupuncture we provide a unique blend of classical acupuncture and moxibustion techniques to address specialist areas such as pregnancy support and paediatric treatments, alongside a wide range of other treatment specialities.
PREGNANCY
I love treating pregnancy patients here at Coast Life Midwifery. Acupuncture and moxibustion are modalities that are ideally suited to encourage and support the pregnancy process. We can help throughout all stages of your pregnancy to enhance wellbeing for you and your baby and allow a calmer experience right through to the all-important birth. PAEDIATRIC
Shonishin (paediatric acupuncture) offers a viable alternative to pharmaceuticals in the treatment of childhood health problems – everything from behavioural and emotional to many physical conditions. Our paediatric treatments are available for infants through to teenagers, and are customised to ensure a safe, nurturing environment for your child. In most cases, needles are not inserted during paediatric treatments and we use specialised paediatric tools alongside moxibustion.
ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is an energy-based medicine – we work with Qi, the vital force found in all living things. Firstly, we do a pulse diagnosis, then we observe the tongue and examine the abdomen. Following this assessment, we insert fine needles into the skin at nerve centres throughout the body. We apply the root treatment (detecting deficiency and excess in constitutional Qi patterns based around individual genetic predisposition); we use a gentle needling process to stimulate the nervous system, which signals the midbrain to release endorphins, enkephalins and increases blood flow to targeted areas throughout your body. When your acupuncture points are stimulated, it alters your experience of pain and discomfort by promoting your body’s internal healing regulating system
MOXIBUSTION
We also use moxibustion, where we combust a traditional herb called Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris latifolia) to stimulate specific points. This method originated in ancient China in about 2,200 years ago and is the practice of thermal heat stimulation applied to acupuncture points, which provides a different therapeutic effect to needling. Hence, moxibustion is seen as an important adjunct to acupuncture treatment, which I personally use a lot in my treatments, as the healing the power of good quality moxibustion is of particular fascination to me. Moxibustion is also ideal to improve blood flow and to take care of all interlinked systems within your body. It is used to treat minor problems such as a common cold but also in major medical treatments such as infertility, various gastrointestinal diseases and other conditions.
